The Greens: Gaining speed

Independent regional Green Alliances are sprouting up throughout California and most other states. They are connected by the “ten key values” to which all Green Alliances must pledge commitment. They advocate grassroots democracy and a decision-making process based on consensus (as opposed to majority rule). Participation in the Committees of Correspondence, which exist to distribute updates and information among regional groups, is optional.

The philosophy of the movement is that environmental damage is a symptom of the priorities of our current society, and a complete restructuring of those priorities is needed if we are to live in harmony on Earth. Social justice, equal opportunity, and a non-exploitative approach to life are essential to human survival.

Each community can form its own Green Alliance. In fact, small regional groups are preferred due to the use of the consensus method of decision-making.

Recently, the decision was made to form a Calfornia Green Party. For the Green Party to participate in state elections and send representatives to Washington, 80,000 registered Greens are needed. Registering as a Green does not oblige one to vote for the Greens.
