Environmentalists for Peace

BAA members concerned about the Persian Gulf War in 1990–1991 formed a new BAA project, Environmentalists for Peace. When it became clear organizers at Earth Island Institute were already focused on similar issues, a coalition of groups from around the Bay Area was formed under the new moniker Bay Area Environmental Peace Action Network (BAEPAN).

BAEPAN drafted principles of unity calling for:

  1. An immediate cease-fire in the Persian Gulf.
  2. Increased public awareness of the environmental effects of the war.
  3. Creation and adoption of a national energy policy based on energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy resources.
  4. The involvement of environmentalists in peace activities.

Owen Byrd and Beth Elkin were BAEPAN leaders at BAA.
